Israel’s US Ambassador Smashes Biased Coverage on CNN

This is a re-post from Virtual Jerusalem

In one of the best performances by an Israeli spokesman since the start of Operation Protective Edge, Israel's US ambassador, Ron Dermer, turned the tables on a CNN anchor who tried to corner him over the deaths of children in a Gaza school that was bombed.

"What happened here is horrific," said anchor Erin Burnett, "and we don't yet even know the scale of how many children may have died. Initial reports indicate that at least sixteen are dead and the initial report said that this attack had come from Israeli tanks. As you know the Israeli military said it may have come from Hamas and a rocket which which misfired. Do you know at this point with any more certainty?"

Where are the Palestinian Mothers?

This is a re-post from The Wall Street Journal
By Bret Stephens

In March 2004, a Palestinian teenager named Hussam Abdo was spotted by Israeli soldiers behaving suspiciously as he approached the Hawara checkpoint in the West Bank. Ordered at gunpoint to raise his sweater, the startled boy exposed a suicide vest loaded with nearly 20 pounds of explosives and metal scraps, constructed to maximize carnage. A video taken by a journalist at the checkpoint captured the scene as Abdo was given scissors to cut himself free of the vest, which had been strapped tight to his body in the expectation that it wouldn't have to come off. He's been in an Israeli prison ever since.

This is a re-post from rabbisacks.org

This past Shabbat we read the parsha of Chukkat with its almost incomprehensible commandment of the red heifer whose mixed with "living water" purified those who had been in contact with death so that they could enter the Mishkan, symbolic home of the glory of God. Almost incomprehensible but not entirely so.

The mitzvah of the parah adumah, the red heifer, was a protest against the religions of the ancient world that glorified death. Death for the Egyptians was the realm of the spirits and the gods. The pyramids were places where, it was believed, the spirit of the dead Pharaoh ascended to heaven and joined the immortals.

Dodging the Draft Because of God?!

I am a platoon sergeant in the IDF. I am a religious Jew. I am a platoon sergeant in the IDF because I am a religious Jew.

Days ago, hundreds of thousands of religious Charedi Jews gathered in Jerusalem to protest the idea that they should be drafted into the army like every other Jewish citizen of Israel. A similar demonstration was held this week in New York. They didn't call to renounce their Israeli citizenship or demand mass emigration. On the contrary, the same Charedi leadership who organized the protest continues to demand that the country they refuse to serve, service them and fund their institutions. This, they claim, is the Torah law and the will of God....
